MARWA AL-SABOUNI: Architect and writer

Marwa Al-Sabouni is a Syrian architect and a writer.

When war in Syria broke out she refused to leave her home city. She believes that architecture plays a role in maintaining a city’s peace.

Her first book, The Battle for Home, was selected by The Guardian as one of the top architectural books of 2016.

She was selected as one of the BBC 100 Women in 2019. She also has drawn up plans in her book, to rebuild the destroyed district of Baba Amr in a way that would bring different classes and ethnic groups together.

She became the finalist of Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2018. She has also received the Prince Claus award for outstanding achievement of visionaries in 2018.
