Nadya Bakhurji, the first Saudi woman to become a board member of the Saudi Council of Engineers and has campaigned for the recognition of Saudi female architects and engineers in the Kingdom. In 2007 she established “Nadia Bukharji Architectural and Interior Design Consultants” in Riyadh. The aim of the company is to offer comprehensive design services with the partnership with top-notch European architectural and engineering firms. In 2004 Bukharji become the first Saudi woman to make republic about her intentions of running as a candidate for the Riyadh Local Municipality elections. Later in 2006 she was awarded a Chevening Scholarship with University College London in the UK, aiming on “Women’s participation in politics and decision making, and gender mainstreaming within organizations”. Since then Bukharji has won two consecutive seats on the Board of the Saudi Council of Engineers in 2005 and in 2009. She has taken an active role as a female pioneer in her field and also as a role model to young women throughout Saudi Arabia. In 2011 she was selected to represent Saudi Arabia on the Committee of Arab Women Engineers with a prime mandate to empower women in the engineering fields in the Arab world.
