Su’ad Khabeer-scholar, artist and activist

Su’ad Khabeer is a scholar-artist and activist. She is an associate professor in American Culture and Arab and Muslim American Studies at the University of Michigan.  Her research focuses on anthropology and performance to explore the intersections of race and popular culture. She is the creator of the website Sapelo Square, which is the first website that documents and analyzes the experience of black, Muslims-Americans. The website offers articles, blog posts, interviews and creative works by Muslims.

She has also written for The Root, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, The Atlantic, Ebony Magazine, and Religious Dispatches and has also appeared on Al-Jazeera English. Her latest book, Muslim Cool documents the connection between Islam and hip-hop culture in the US.  Sa’ud is the Senior Project Advisor for the US Public Television award-winning documentary, New Muslim Cool. She was also profiled as one of the 25 Most Influential American Muslims by CNN.
