Uzra Jafari is the first female mayor in Afghanistan and the current mayor of Nili town. She is an afghan politician and author.
She was editor of Chief Afghan’s social and cultural magazine Farhang in 1998. She is among one of the 200 women who participated in the loya jirga after the fall of Taliban in 2002. Jafari established an elementary school for Afghan refugees in Iran.
As an author, she contributed in Making of the New Constitution of Afghanistan. It is about the political system and process in the country and was published in 2003. She also wrote the book I am a Working Woman in 2008. The book extensively talks about the employment law and the rights of Afghan women in labor market. Jafri become respected by many in the town and has earned the name of “Mr Mayor”. Her goal is to inspire other women to follow her into positions of leadership.
In 2011 Azra has been awarded the Meeto Memorial Award for Young South Asians, from Pakistan National Council of Arts for her tremendous work.
